GRIZZLIES, CUBS and nuBEARS, OH MY!
If they grow ‘em bigger in the Lone Star State
then the Texas
Bear Round-Up XVI, better known as TBRU, happening March 17-20 in Dallas
is sure to please the size queen event-chaser in you! The theme is “Bears of Justice: Heroes vs. Villans” and is sponsored by a local charity brotherhood known as the Dallas Bears. By the looks of their website www.tbru.org it’s going to be one hell of a weekend. I’d love to go if some rugged cowboy
wants to ship a saucy cowgirl
in from Palm Springs for good times and dancing nights. Never hurts to try. Oh, and I top.
Last year the attendance was 1277 according to their web domain and their current total is close to reaching that. If you’re planning on attending and haven’t made arrangemtments do so now. If you’re a gentle cub admirer, hardcore bear lover
, grizzly man with massive furry tits nipples blazing, goateed nuBears just finding your place among the hirsute or you bigger boys with some mirth and girth, this is for you! I like a man I can hold on to and bet money I could find a cuddle bear among those growling. Having washboard abs is so yesterday, or West Hollywood
. Take your pick. This sounds like the event I’d truly dig being part of. Bring it this way, bears!
This wonderful occasion is known as a “Party with a Purpose” and in being so they have generously donated $38K to deserving local charities Youth First Texas (www.youthfirsttexas.org), AIDS Interfaith Network (www.aidsinterfaithnetwork.org) and AIDS Service of Dallas (www.aidsdallas.org.) Through the help of priceless volunteers, big donations and compassionate sponsorships this celebration of bear brotherhood happens every year to the joy and thrill of those in attendance. I had the pleasure of being in contact with Derrick Dawson, a board member of the Dallas Bears, and asked for a few statements about the purpose of the Texas Bear Round-Up and what makes it work so successfully. This is what Derrick had to share:
“TBRU has grown into one of the largest bear runs around due to passion, dedication, community spirit, leadership and camaraderie that the Dallas Bears, supporters, and brother clubs unite/stand together to make happen. It’s a very strong bond of brotherhood and extension of friendships that bind and hold us together. We continue to run TBRU with humble hearts and embrace the community as our own.”
“As a veteran of the United States Navy, the challenge and feeling of accomplishment after such an event knowing/hoping that you’ve made an extraordinary difference not only for our local charities, but our club brothers, attendees, and brining our community together makes it all worth while in the end!”
The schedule for the weekend is packed tighter that a stud fucker in some snug Wranglers with a growing shower in the front and to the left. That’s where I wear mine. I’m just sayin’. A few events start as early as Wednesday with a Cigar
Social and Drag Review at local watering holes. The entire gayborhood of Cedar Springs will be hopping on rooftops and plan on fighting festive crowds when out and about. On Thursday the Kick-Off Party and Costume
Contest is happening at the host hotel at the Dallas Market Center, the Crowne Plaza. I believe many of the bars will be having costume contests, as well, so keep them near, dears.
Friday things really get going with what is sublimely called a “Spa Excursion
” to Club Dallas. I doubt seriously that it’s a round of mani/pedi, massage and facial. Well, possibly the latter two. Price is $20 and I’m assuming includes a locker plus clean towel. Sounds like my type of excursion, indeed. I must admit that I am familiar with the location. It’s been a few years but pleasure places like the Club Baths splattered across the country offers one optimistic option. I appreciate that.
On Friday evening a tailor-made bear party happens starting at 8 p.m. called “Blow Off” and is known as the Big D Bear Dance. Picture it. Dallas, Texas. 2011. Musicians/DJs Bob Mould and Rich Morel provide the thumping beats and S4 on Cedar Springs Road provides the backdrop. Sweaty fur finding facial hair and swollen lips touching another, hot tongues escaping and returning to wet mouths. Tickets are $25 and this is the only party available to non-registered event goers. The After-Party is at the Mining Company at 2 a.m. unless you find your way back to Club Dallas and if you do, rent a room. Stretch out and relax. Leave the door open.
The party continues when you wake on Saturday since there’s another Spa Excursion planned to Midtowne Spa this round. An extra adventure that’s available is a tour of the new Dallas Cowboys
Stadium which sounds like something I’d love to do. Do you get to try on the cheerleader uniforms?! There’s a great Vendor Market happening at the hotel all weekend, meetings for Friends of Bill W. and pool parties galore. Make sure you have a fully charged phone battery to snap those pictures and update your Facebook statuses so we can live vicariously through you attendees.
The Mr. TBRU contest is being held Saturday evening starting at 8:30 and has three contestant categories of Bear, Cub and Admirer. The judged categories include Theme Attire (“Heroes vs. Villains”), Boxer/Underwear, Bear Wear of Choice and a fun On-Stage Q/A. The contest isn’t a preliminary to another and is more of a charity event that introduces new individuals to the community and brotherhood. Prizes include the title, gift baskets, run passes for TBRU 17, and other great stuff. Contestants can be anyone registered as an attendee. However, full members of the Dallas Bears are ineligible to compete.
Sunday there’s Church at the Hidden Door starting at 2:30 p.m. which has become a tradition with a Texas BBQ and Closing Ceremony prior. Even though many will be checking out from the hotels, almost all are already sold-out even the overflow lodging, events continue throughout the day including a T-Dance at Dallas Eagle starting at 5 p.m. Again, please check www.tbru.org for a complete schedule of events, happenings and places one must-be-where.
Improvements from past years events promised include hotel rates rolling back to last year’s prices, more pool parties, new technology to move check-ins more swiftly, accommodating shuttles to and from events and locations, a game room (not sure if that’s Galaga
and Ms. Pac Man
, or what) and comfortable sober zones for dry attendees. The Hospitality Room will be open with a charity Underwear
Auction happening and of course, that Texas southern hospitality one can expect from any randy cowboy.
All weekend local bars will be having fun events, costume contests, drunken easy pickups, condoms on the way out the door, bass music feeling its moment through speakers
and bartenders deserving gratuitous tips for dealing with your crazy ass. I’m sure he (or she) would love to be out partying with their friends but if they didn’t work then the bars and nightclubs wouldn’t be open and you couldn’t attend having your fun. Think about that when ordering and tipping, and call a taxi if you’re unable to safely drive. Have fun, but always responsibly.
Palm Springs
and PULP Magazine salute the hirsute and send furry fuzzy hugs your way! (Insert bear noises here) Grrrrr! Roar! Woof! (Oh, that’s a dog.)
