Every once in a while something will come across my desk that may not be right topically for the columns I'm working on but needs attention, nonetheless. In nearby Borrego Valley, there's an infestation of an ugly turnip-like plant called Sahara Mustard and it's taking over the space that a gorgeous rainbow of Spring wildflowers grow. The area is northeast San Diego County at the Anza-Borrego State Park and they are looking for volunteers for upcoming days of weeding and cleaning out the areas to protect what's left of the beautiful flowers. Thousands of acres are wrought with this congestion and with man-power and determination, work can be achieved. The drive is 90 minutes each way via the Salton Sea or there are other ways through the mountains.
There are a few upcoming weeding sessions scheduled but Larry Hendrickson (lhendrickson@parks.ca.gov) can work with volunteers and groups about scheduling another time. If anyone can help in ANY way, PLEASE DO. I hope this finds the eyes of someone(s) that can help.

The first in 2005 and the second just this past year in 2010. Sad and tragic, no?! =[
